Alfie and Family Values

SCENE: Gilda tells Alfie she is pregnant (Family Values)

In this scene Gilda thinks it is important for her and Alfie to get married now that she is pregnant as family values are important to her. During this time it became a society expectation that women should be married before having children and that they should stay at home and look after the children while the man is out working.

Althusser
Gilda recognises that it is expected of women to be married as when she goes to have the baby at the hospital she pretends to be married to Alfie and uses his surname as she was afraid that people would look down on her for having no husband.

Marcuse
The prescribed attitude would be that Gilda should marry Alfie in order to meet societies expectations.
