The scene shown here is the first time when the parents of Jenny meet David, which

whilst meeting him, there is a sense of tension. The clip demonstrates a stereotypical

example of the daughter showing his mum and dad his boyfriend. But unstereotypically,

David is jewish and he is pretty old whilst Jenny's parents expected someone younger perhaps.

This scene shows references of Althusser's principle, because this clip identifies the characters

identifying with common rituals played when in the process of meeting someone instrumental

to the family.

Plus, Macuse could have an impact on a passive audience whom in some societies do the same

ritual and allow a newcomer into the house and speak to them. Plus, reference to when Jenny brought

round Graham and they had dinner with the family with the stereotypical conversations of what you

do and what exactly he wants to do, possibly go to university in which Graham says he would prefer

to go on a gap year, which, in this society today is considered constructive and understandable but

in the 1960s was looked in more of a taboo by some high class families based on success. Marcuse'

principal also comes into play here with even now, gap years being viewed by some audiences as

a waste of time.
